About Compress PDF

Large PDF files cause headaches — email servers reject attachments over 10 MB, cloud storage fills up quickly, and slow file transfers waste time. The Compress PDF tool tackles this by reducing your PDF's file size significantly without requiring any desktop software.

PDF compression works by identifying and removing redundant data within the file. The primary technique is image downsampling: most PDFs contain embedded images saved at higher resolutions than a screen or printer needs. Our compressor resamples these images to an appropriate DPI, discards embedded ICC colour profiles that are rarely needed, and removes metadata artefacts. For text-heavy PDFs with few images, compression ratios are lower (10–30%), while image-heavy documents like scanned reports can shrink by 60–80%.

Compression levels explained:

  • Low quality: Maximum file size reduction. Suitable for archiving or sharing previews where pixel-perfect sharpness is not required.
  • Medium quality (recommended): Balanced reduction typically achieving 40–65% size savings. Images remain sharp at normal viewing distances and on screen.
  • High quality: Conservative compression with minimal visual change. Best for print-ready files where image fidelity matters.

Unlike some tools that flatten all layers and strip interactive elements, our compressor retains hyperlinks, form fields, and annotations wherever possible. If you need to reduce size further after compression, consider also running the file through Remove PDF Pages to delete any blank or unnecessary pages, then re-compress.

After compression you may also want to password-protect your PDF before sending it to a recipient, especially for confidential documents.

Privacy: Your PDF is uploaded over an encrypted HTTPS connection, processed on our servers, and deleted automatically within 60 minutes. We process the file programmatically — no human ever reads your content. Compression is 100% free with no account needed.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much will my PDF be compressed?
Results depend on content. Image-heavy PDFs typically shrink 40–80%. Text-only PDFs compress 10–30%. You see the actual savings before downloading.
Will compression reduce the visual quality?
At the Medium setting (recommended), quality loss is minimal and unnoticeable on screen. The Low setting produces the smallest file but with visible image degradation at high zoom. High setting keeps quality nearly identical to the original.
Can I compress a scanned PDF?
Yes. Scanned PDFs consist entirely of images, so compression can achieve very significant size reductions, often 50–70%.
Is the tool completely free?
Yes — no cost, no account required, no watermarks, and no daily usage limits.
What is the maximum file size I can compress?
Up to 50 MB per file. If your PDF is larger, consider splitting it first, compressing each part, then merging the results.
Are my files private?
Your file is transferred over HTTPS and processed on isolated servers. It is automatically deleted within one hour. We never read or share your documents.
Does compression remove form fields or signatures?
No. Our compressor targets image data and redundant metadata. Form fields, digital signatures, and hyperlinks are preserved.
Can I compress on mobile?
Yes. The tool works in mobile browsers on iPhone and Android. No app download is required.
What browsers are supported?
Chrome, Firefox, Safari, and Edge on both desktop and mobile are fully supported.
How long does compression take?
Typically 5–20 seconds depending on file size and content density.
Why is my compressed PDF larger than expected?
If your PDF was already compressed or consists mainly of text, there is little redundant data to remove. Try the Low setting for maximum reduction in these cases.
