RoughTools (“we”, “our”, or “us”) operates roughtools.com (the “Site”). This policy explains what information we collect, how we use it, and your rights regarding your personal data. We are committed to transparency, especially regarding our use of advertising and analytics services.

1a. Information you provide directly

All tool calculations run entirely in your browser. No input data you enter into any tool is ever sent to our servers or stored. If you contact us by email, we collect your email address and the content of your message for the purpose of responding.

1b. Automatically collected usage data

When you visit the Site, the following information may be collected automatically by the third-party services described in Section 3:

• Browser type and version, operating system
• Pages visited, time on page, referring URL
• Approximate geographic location (country / region level only)
• Device type (desktop, mobile, tablet)
• IP address (anonymised before storage by Google Analytics)

2. Cookies and Similar Technologies

We use cookies and similar tracking technologies. The table below lists every category of cookie used on this site, who sets them, and their purpose.

Managing cookies: When you first visit the Site, a consent banner asks for your permission before analytics and advertising cookies are set. You can change your preferences at any time by clearing your browser cookies and revisiting (the banner will reappear). 3. Google AdSense (Advertising)

We use Google AdSense to display advertisements on the Site. AdSense is operated by Google LLC (or, for EEA users, Google Ireland Limited).

AdSense may use cookies and web beacons to serve ads based on your prior visits to this site and other sites on the internet. Google’s use of advertising cookies enables it and its partners to serve ads based on your visit to our site and/or other sites on the Internet.

• What it collects: Cookie identifiers, IP address, browser fingerprint, browsing behaviour across sites that show Google ads.
• What it is used for: Selecting relevant ads, measuring ad performance, fraud prevention, and frequency capping.
• Consent Mode v2: We have implemented Google Consent Mode v2. For EU/UK/EEA users, advertising cookies will not be set until you accept the consent banner. Non-personalised ads may be shown without consent.

4. Google Analytics (Traffic Analysis)

We use Google Analytics 4 (GA4) to understand how visitors use the Site — which tools are most useful, how people navigate between pages, and where traffic comes from.

• IP addresses are anonymised before being stored.
• Data is aggregated; we do not identify individual users.
• Data is stored on Google’s servers and subject to Google’s data-processing terms.
• Opt out using the Google Analytics opt-out extension.

5. Vercel Analytics & Speed Insights

We use Vercel Analytics (privacy-first, no cookies) and Vercel Speed Insights (Core Web Vitals measurements) to monitor Site performance. These services collect anonymised performance metrics only and do not set cookies or collect personal data.

6. How We Use Your Information

• To operate and improve the Site and its tools
• To understand which tools are most useful and prioritise development
• To serve relevant advertisements that fund the free service
• To respond to enquiries sent to us by email
• To comply with legal obligations

We do not sell, rent, or trade personal data with third parties for their own marketing purposes.

7. Data Retention

Tool calculation inputs are never sent to or stored on our servers — retention is zero. Email enquiries are retained for up to 2 years and then deleted. Analytics data is retained in Google Analytics for 14 months (our configured retention period). Advertising data is retained by Google per their policies.

8. Your Rights (GDPR / UK GDPR / CCPA)

Depending on where you are located, you may have the following rights regarding your personal data:

• Access: Request a copy of the personal data we hold about you.
• Rectification: Request correction of inaccurate data.
• Erasure: Request deletion of your personal data.
• Restriction: Ask us to stop processing your data in certain circumstances.
• Portability: Receive your data in a machine-readable format.
• Objection: Object to processing based on legitimate interest.
• Withdraw consent: Withdraw consent at any time (does not affect prior processing).

9. Children’s Privacy

10. Security

The Site is served over HTTPS. All tool calculations run client-side in your browser. Because input data is never transmitted, there is no risk of data breach from server-side storage of your calculation inputs.

11. Changes to This Policy

We may update this policy to reflect changes in our practices or applicable law. When we make material changes, we will update the “Last updated” date at the top of this page. Continued use of the Site after any update constitutes acceptance of the revised policy.
