About Flatten PDF

A PDF with interactive form fields or annotations can be problematic in certain situations: form values may not print correctly in all viewers, annotations may be hidden when the document is converted or archived, and editable fields can be changed by recipients after submission. Flatten PDF resolves all of these issues by merging every interactive element into the static page content.

Flattening works by iterating over each annotation, form field, and interactive element in the PDF and rendering its current value or appearance directly into the page content stream. After flattening, the form field widget no longer exists as a separate, interactive element — its value becomes part of the visible page, just like any other text or image.

Situations requiring PDF flattening:

  • Preventing recipients from altering completed form values after submission
  • Ensuring annotations and sticky notes are visible in all PDF viewers
  • Preparing a PDF for archiving in PDF/A format (which requires no interactive elements)
  • Fixing printing issues where form fields appear blank or misaligned
  • Creating a final, non-editable version of a signed agreement

Flattening is a one-way operation — you cannot convert a flattened PDF back into an editable form. Always keep a backup of the original form PDF before flattening.

After flattening, if the document has sensitive information that should be hidden from certain recipients, use our Redact PDF tool to permanently black out that content. For the final distribution copy, you may also want to compress it to reduce the file size.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does flattening a PDF do?
Flattening merges interactive form fields, annotations, stamps, and digital signature appearances into the static page content, making the document non-editable and ensuring consistent display.

Will filled-in form values be preserved?
Yes. Current field values are rendered as static text in the exact position of each field.
Does flattening affect page quality?
No. Flattening is a structural operation that merges existing content without recompressing images or re-rendering text.

Yes. Free with no account required.
What is the file size limit?
