How to Use Passport Photo Maker
- 1
Upload your photo
Upload a clear, recent photo of yourself against a plain background. Face forward, eyes open, neutral expression — the same requirements as at a professional photo studio.
- 2
Select your country or document type
Choose from 50+ country presets (US passport, UK passport, Schengen visa, Indian passport, etc.) and the tool automatically sets the correct dimensions, DPI, and background requirements.
- 3
Position and crop your face
Use the crop tool to position your face in the frame. The guide overlay shows the required face-to-frame ratio — your face should occupy 70–80% of the frame height in most country standards.
- 4
Set background
If your photo has a non-white background, use the background removal tool to replace it with the required plain white or off-white background.
- 5
Download
Download the finished photo at the correct pixel dimensions and DPI for printing. Print at a photo lab or at home on 4×6 inch photo paper to cut the correct number of photos.

About Passport Photo Maker
The Passport Photo Maker formats your photo to meet the strict size and background requirements for passport applications, visa applications, and other official government documents. Instead of paying for a photo booth or photo studio, you can create compliant passport photos at home and print them on any color printer — saving money while getting instant results.
Passport photo creation is needed for:
- Creating US passport photos (2×2 inches, white background, 300 DPI) for renewal or new applications
- Making UK/EU passport photos (35×45mm) for British, European, and many other country documents
- Producing visa application photos at the specific size required by different embassies
- Creating employment and ID badge photos at corporate standard sizes
- Making student ID photos for university and school applications
The tool automatically detects your face using a client-side face detection model (TensorFlow.js) to center and size the head within the frame according to the requirement that the face occupy 70–80% of the photo height. The background replacement algorithm detects the background area using edge detection and replaces it with the official required color (white for most passports). The output is rendered at 300 DPI for print quality — a 2×2 inch photo becomes a 600×600 pixel file, printed at exactly the correct physical size. A print sheet with 4–6 photos on standard 4×6 inch paper is generated for convenient printing.
Size presets: US Passport (2×2 in / 51×51mm), UK Passport (35×45mm), EU Passport (35×45mm), Australian Passport (35×45mm), Indian Passport (2×2 in), Chinese Visa (33×48mm). Background colors: white, off-white, light gray. Output DPI: 300. Print layout: 4×6 inch sheet with 4 or 6 passport photos.
Face detection runs locally in your browser. Background replacement is processed on our secure server and images are immediately deleted after the formatted photo is returned. No passport photos are stored or retained. Always verify your photo meets current requirements on the official government website before submitting, as specifications can be updated. Use the ID Card Photo Maker for non-passport ID formats.
Pro Tips for Passport Photo Maker
Photograph against a clean white or light gray wall with diffused natural light from a window — even lighting with no harsh shadows on the background gives the most compliant result.
Face the camera squarely with a neutral or slight smile — most passport authorities now prohibit wide smiles, open mouths, and visible teeth.
Print on matte photo paper, not glossy — government scanning systems work better with matte and many official photo guidelines specify matte finish.
Check the final photo at 1:1 print size (print on regular paper first) before printing the final version — eye position, shoulder width, and head size look different at actual print scale vs. screen view.
