What Is Volume?

Volume is the amount of three-dimensional space enclosed within a solid shape. It is measured in cubic units — cubic inches, cubic feet, cubic centimeters, cubic meters — or in liquid equivalents like liters and gallons. Every solid shape has its own volume formula derived from its geometry.

The simplest shape is the rectangular prism (box): multiply length times width times height. A box that is 2 feet by 3 feet by 4 feet contains 24 cubic feet of space. More complex shapes like spheres and cones require formulas involving pi (π) and radius or height. A cylinder's volume is the area of its circular base (π × r²) multiplied by its height.

Volume matters across a wide range of practical applications. In construction, you need to know the volume of a concrete slab, a trench, or a fill area to order the right amount of material — typically sold by the cubic yard. In pool maintenance, total gallons determine how much chemical to add. In aquariums, gallons determine stocking capacity and filtration requirements. Concrete slab: Dimensions: 20 ft × 10 ft × 4 inches (= 0.333 ft) Volume = 20 × 10 × 0.333 = 66.7 cubic feet Convert: 66.7 ÷ 27 = 2.47 cubic yards of concrete (concrete is sold by the cubic yard)

Swimming pool: Rectangular: 30 ft × 15 ft × 5 ft average depth Volume = 30 × 15 × 5 = 2,250 cubic feet Convert: 2,250 × 7.481 = 16,832 gallons

Water tank (cylindrical): Radius = 3 ft, Height = 8 ft Volume = π × 3² × 8 = 3.14159 × 9 × 8 = 226.2 cubic feet = 1,691 gallons

Practical Volume Applications

Mulch/topsoil calculation: Volume needed (cubic feet) = Area (sq ft) × Depth (ft) A 200 sq ft garden bed with 3" of mulch: 200 × 0.25 = 50 cubic feet Convert to cubic yards: 50 ÷ 27 = 1.85 cubic yards (mulch is sold by the cubic yard)

Aquarium capacity: Convert cubic inches to gallons: Volume (in³) ÷ 231 = US gallons A 24"×12"×16" tank: (24×12×16) ÷ 231 = 4,608 ÷ 231 = 19.9 gallons

Fuel tank: Convert known dimensions to gallons using the formula for the tank shape (most are rectangular or cylindrical).

Frequently Asked Questions

How many cubic feet are in a cubic yard? One cubic yard = 3 ft × 3 ft × 3 ft = 27 cubic feet. This conversion is essential for materials sold by the cubic yard: concrete, mulch, topsoil, gravel, fill dirt. If you need 270 cubic feet of fill dirt, you need 270 ÷ 27 = 10 cubic yards.

What is the volume of a gallon in cubic inches? One US gallon = 231 cubic inches exactly (by legal definition). One UK gallon = 277.4 cubic inches. This is why swimming pool calculations and aquarium sizing often convert from cubic inches to gallons by dividing by 231.

How do I calculate the volume of an irregular 3D shape? Methods: (1) Water displacement — submerge the object in a known volume of water; the volume increase equals the object's volume. (2) Divide into regular shapes — decompose the irregular shape into cubes, cylinders, and pyramids, calculate each, and sum.
